Solid Projectile Weaponry

From Empires of the IV
Jump to: navigation, search

Not to be mistaken with Electromagnetic Weaponry which use magnetism, these weapons use a variety of standard ballistics using a fuel propellant of some kind. Most, if not all, Empires have these in some form, even if they are considered obsolete. These weapons however are still quite deadly regardless, and find plenty of use in the galaxy at Large.

New Covenant SP Weapons

Solid Projectile Weapons are considered Obsolete by most Empires, though they continue to have just as much Lethality as they did in long times past, and in the Case of the New Covenant these weapons are drastically more lethal than ones of the 21st Century Earth. All Autoguns, as they are called in the Empire, have an Impact power roughly equal to that of old .50 caliber Weaponry. This is due to the fact of the advanced propellants used by the New Covenant, which cause the bullets to reach higher Velocities than more ancient weapons with ease. Even small caliber pistols hit with the power of a .45 caliber pistol of modern times, so one can assume larger caliber weapons have even tougher impacts. Even with all these benefits though, the advancements of modern armor, allow these powerful weapons to be protected against by even standard Flak armors of the New Covenant. These weapons though can be upgraded, to reduce recoil, reduce the friction of the barrel to near nothing, and so on. If basic weapons can achieve this lethality, one can only assume how powerful larger New Covenant SP weapons are, especially with new ammunition type currently in development to give these weapons an even better edge against what would be considered more advanced weapons.

Even with these advancements the Laser weapons of the New Covenant retain prominence, due to there higher penetration power, versus stopping power.

Infantry Weapons

Machine Guns, Assault Rifles, Pistols, Rifles, and Shotguns can be found in this category. All of these use caseless ammunition and projectiles made from Harden Plastic-ceramic mixes, to Steel-plastic Mixes, though in the case of Shotguns it is usually just steel shot as other types of shot are not as effective.

The Weapons themselves are made from Plastic and steel mix, which makes them light and reliable. The most standard weapon is the G-416 Autogun, which appears as a mix between a M-16 and the AK-47. It was the standard Assault rifle of the Guard forces until being phased out and replaced with more efficient Laser weapons, but large stock piles of the weapons still remain withing New Covenant bases, along with Ammunition. A Variant of this Gun, the G-416H sported an elongated body, and Barrel and fired the same caliber but at higher rates, and could sport either a box or drum Magazine.

The Ammunition for The Autogun is interesting, in that while being solid projectiles weapons one variant of the Ammunition that became most widely used was the Flail round. The Flail round is a Ceramic Plastic round with a plastic explosive charge inside that explodes on contact and sometimes after penetration. This round became widely used and produced in the years before switching to laser weapons and it was highly effective against lightly armored and shielded targets, but was worthless against harder targets such as Power Armored units. Lightly Armored units however are killed easily and shields fall quickly to the rounds, as the Round impact combined with the explosion after adds high amounts of stress to personal shields usually causing them to fail rapidly. In Units with no Armor, death is guaranteed. Currently a new Version of the Flail round is in development, to make Autoguns a feasible Alternative to Laser Weaponry.

Standard ammunition is available in large Quantities, But the Flail round is usually most preferred since it only improves the damage capability of the weapon.

G-416

G-416 Autogun - The Standard Solid Projectile Weapon of basic Infantry in the New Covenant, it is extremely reliable and fires case-less rounds of all types, usually of 7.62 mm rounds. It is both Semi-auto and fully automatic, and is fairly light yet robust in construction and can even fire in a Vacuum. In more recent times this guns only really sees any use as an optional weapon in the military, and is civilian and militia accessible. It has been all but replaced by Laser weapons in the current military. The G-416H is a heavier LMG variant.

CS-231

CS-231 - This weapon is a Semi-Automatic shotgun, used by infantry forces, and the militia. It can fire various rounds including micro-grenades the size of standard 12 gauge rounds. This weapon is preferred in ship combat as it is highly effective in close quarters and will not damage the hull of the ship or other important things within a ship. Besides those conditions it is not normally used, and is accessible to civilian use.

XRS-52

XRS-52 - This Light sniper rifle uses advanced high impact case-less rounds, and is the standard rifle of sniper teams in the Guardsmen forces. It is primarily Anti-Infantry, but can be used with precision to take out heavier Infantry, and true Marksmen have been known to take out Crusader grade Armored target, by hitting very small weak spots.

Flail 2.0 Weapons Flail 2.0 is the newest version of the Flail round, and it gives solid projectile weapons a new edge in combat especially against foes armored, shielded and the like. The new Flail can be likened to Lance rounds, being gyroscopic jet propelled as well as having an initial powder-putty charge. These weapons are typically high explosive rounds, and lack the sophistication of the Lance as well as the more expensive materials such as Diamantite tips. The Flail is either a plas-steel or hardened ceramic round, but now having a gyroscopic jet component for higher acceleration and impact, the charge as usual is high explosive, though the recent ventures in solid projectile weapons have allowed investment into varying charges for the rounds for different situations, such as Heavy Hesh rounds for power armored targets, and even experimental warp sensitive rounds for users with Psyker or Psionic abilities. Developments continue for this round and weapons designed to use it, though currently it is more common to see guns being refitted to fire these rounds.

"Brick"

NC sAR 1 "Brick" - This Assault Rifle with full auto, burst fire, and semi-auto fire rate settings is the first military standardized weapon to fire Flail 2.0 rounds. It is robust and has a bullpup loading design to give it a compact length without sacrificing barrel length. Its robust frame allows for the installation of many systems from frictionless barrels, and targeting systems to Charge Dissipater for shocking someone smacked with the hardy weapon. The only real downside to the weapon is its need for ammo, as Laser weapons are overall lighter and easily recharged, but it makes up for it in firepower and the impact of its shots. It has become a favorite of soldiers who prefer Autoguns to Laser Rifles, and standardized training for weapons like this has been reimplemented, instead of being optional additional training. This Weapon sets the Standard for weapons to come that will use this ammunition.

New Weapons from Sniper rifles to shotguns for this Ammo type are still in development.

Special Forces Weapons

Special Forces weapons include those used by the Crusaders, Assassins, and even elite Troops within the Guard as well. The Rectus Assassins use a Powerful Sniper rifle, Called the Aequitas Rifle, capable of firing multiple types of rounds, being capable of taking out shielded targets, heavily armored target and even vehicles. It is equipped with an advanced scope that interfaces with its user via neural linking making it incredibly accurate even at distances in excess of 3 miles.

As for the Crusaders they use the Powerful Lance Assault Rifle, which fires Armor piercing Gyroscopic Explosive rounds at high velocities, and remains excellent accuracy due to the rounds rocket propelled nature. The round is first propelled by the a standard combustible material and then the built in solid fuel burns of activating its gyroscopic high velocity spins, propelling it forward at higher speeds than expected of such a large round, and impacting with tremendous force. Other Types of Lances exist, such as ones design for sniping with sport a longer barrel and use the same round but with a longer casing for a higher velocity round. The Crusader variants are larger than ones meant for normal Humans, as the Crusader Lances have technologies in them that let them neurally interface with the Crusader's power armor for optimal accuracy.

Human variants are smaller but fire the same round and do not have the advance tech in them for interfacing but operate the same, However these usually have been modified in their own regard to lower the recoil so Humans can use them.

Another Crusader variant is the Storm Lance, which is a twin barreled lance that is capable of extreme rates of fire as compared to a normal lance, it also uses a box magazine or in older models, two Lance Magazine. The weapon is so powerful though that it is often use as a pintel mounted weapon on tanks.

Aequitas Rifle

Aequitas Rifle - Rectus Assassins make use of this specialty High Caliber Rifle. It is incredibly powerful and uses specialty rounds for about every scenario, depending on the target being fired at. Certain rounds are designed to ignore shielding while others for armor penetration, and others may be highly caustic to take out mechanical targets.

Lance L-500

Lance Assault Rifle - The Lance is probably one of the most sophisticated Solid Projectile weapons, as it uses the Lance Round, which is around a 70 caliber Armor piercing explosive round, that uses extremely advance Gyroscopic Thrust and stabilization. The round uses both standard bullet propulsion combined with the Gyroscopic rocket and stabilization to hit very high velocities. These are typically used by Crusaders, who have access to the most advanced versions of these weapons, but their are less complex versions available to the Military's special forces. Below is a short list of the variants.

  • L-500 "Retribution"- Current model used by the Crusader troops, it is a fully auto weapon and features advanced targeting integration and neural integration. It uses 30 round clips and can use large 70 round drums or box magazines. It is capable of customization and variable equipment, from Scopes to combi-weapons that mount under the weapon.
  • L-532 "Hunter"- This model is a marksman Lance, that fires a slightly heavier round, and is semi-automatic. A scope is standard equipment for this weapon as its smaller clip and semi-auto fire are meant for precision. This has all the advanced features of any Crusader Lance Rifle, and is only used by Crusaders.
  • L-36x - This model is seen as quite plain, and not used by Crusaders, as it has none of the advanced features in the Crusader model, and is considerably smaller due to the lack of those components; this leads to it being despised and those who use it looked down upon as it seems to spit on the artisan work of true Lance weapons as well as being seen as a violation of the sanctity of it being a crusader only weapon. It also fires cheaper Lance Rounds as well, and can be seen as a Lance useable by the common Man. It sees use only in the Military's special forces, as a specially requisitioned weapon, and such forces include the Shock Troopers, veteran squads in the army, and the Dark Watch. It is a Semi-automatic Rifle, used like a Carbine for taking out heavy armored troops at mid ranges.

SR-45S

SR-45S- This Sniper weapon is commonly used by Crusaders, and each model is custom design for its owner, even having a genetic lock, making it impossible to use by anyone but the person it was designed for. It is capable of extreme range, and is very powerful, however it is not an assassins weapon and is commonly used by Crusader Squire Scouts. While it is not capable of the same things as a Aequitas Rifle, it is deadly in the hands of a trained sniper. This weapon has a Directed energy equivalent as well, the L model.

M-17"Pounder" Rifle

J&H H.I.E.R. M-17 "Pounder" - This heavy duty Select fire, Rifle weapon is a technological marvel. It was developed by the Jade & Hesh Fabrications, a company that sprung up around the creation of the Dark Watch and has had ties with Dark Watch ever since. This weapon is not so much a rifle as it is a man portable fully auto Grenade Launcher, due to its standard ammunition consisting of 20mm Gyrojet Ammunition which is loaded in either a box or Drum Magazine, though smaller clips can be used. The weapon would sound impractical at this point but it comes down to the ammunition used, which as stated are rocket propelled grenades designed for High Kinetic force impacts. This weapon is meant for killing and clearing out targets, the impacts of these rounds usually send whoever is hit flying back, if not in multiple pieces. This is very effective on physically light troops or enemies as if not killed outright will incapacitate them and can clear grouped enemies, breaking bones and making huge holes in the targets. Against heavily armored troops this is not as effective, and so different ammunition can be loaded and fired for heavier targets, or concentrated fire can beat a target to death, earning the weapon the nick name "Pounder". Such ammunition can include mass incendiary rounds, Penetration rounds that uses an im pact explosive to drive in an Adamantium shard into an armored target, fragmentation rounds, and even rubber Ball rounds for non-lethality. This however is not the limit of the gun, as it has new auto-adjusting heavy duty smooth bore barrel technology, and so the gun adjusts to the round it is firing. This allows it to fire all sizes of Shotgun Shells, from 10 gauge to the .410 Shotgun shell, and this increases the usefulness and the roles this gun can fill as it is capable of firing solid slug variants of each of these shells. The semi and fully automatic fire can turn this gun into an effective close quarters weapon as well as an incredibly powerful street sweeper, depending on the shells fired. Their is ample amounts of recoil reduction mechanisms built into the gun, but even then it is most effective when used by someone in power armor, which goes to show that this weapon was specifically designed for the Dark Watch, and is in fact their standard weapon. For hard targets, large groups, or even vehicles, the Gun can have a single 40mm Gyrojet round loaded into it, and this round can have multiple variants for multiple uses. Common attachments for this blade include, Lights, laser sights/scopes,and Chain Sword Bayonets which is justified by the robust hardy nature of the gun, making it an equally effective melee weapon.

Heavy Weapons

Among Heavy weapons are many devastating choices, and lighter heavy weapons mostly being the standard .50 caliber Machine gun which is used in place of other weapons when they are not available, even with such an old design its killing power has not diminished in the slightest and is truly only ineffective against highly armored targets.

AG-3000 "Grinder" - An older Gatling weapon, brought back and updated with newer technologies, such as standard compacting available in most weapons to make it less bulky when not in use. It uses the 7.62mm case-less round as its standard shot. It fires around 2000 rounds per minute as a man portable version, and is as such for weapon stress reasons, and when mounted on a vehicle can be pushed further, with active maintenance after each engagement. This weapon is commonly used, both as an emplacement, a Vehicle mounted weapon and as a man portable heavy weapon for those able to wield them, making this gun exclusive to the Dark Watch and Guardsmen as the Crusaders do not see a need for its use.

HLR-X75 "Heavy Lance" - A Common heavy weapon using larger Lance rounds and firing them rapidly making effective Anti-Infantry weapon that decimates light infantry and can be used in killing Heavy Infantry as well and is good against light armored vehicles. The Caliber of the round is larger, and is commonly mounted on vehicles, used in defense turrets, used by Heavy Weapons teams, and used by the Crusaders as Man held Heavy Weapons.

AC Mk IX AutoCannon- A popular heavy weapon that is typically used by vehicles as either the main weapon on light vehicles and as a coaxial gun on the standard Greatsword. It is also used by heavy weapons teams on the ground and is a common weapon on the aerial craft of the New Covenant. Crusaders can use this as a heavy weapon as well, but it his fired from the hip and in bursts. The standard Caliber of the weapon is roughly 30mm to 35mm, and uses armor piercing explosive rounds. As a Heavy weapon it has range beyond the Assault cannon making it effective at killing targets at distance.

RC Mk V Assault Cannon - A six barreled rotary cannon, it fires large, approximately 19.05mm, case-less adamantium tipped explosive rounds, and fires them at about 1500rpm. This weapon sees most of it use by the Crusaders where it is mounted on their Heavy Walkers, Sarcophagi, and it is also mounted on many of their vehicles and aircraft. New Covenant Aircraft also see use of them on certain Variants. The extreme heat and wear generated by the guns usually mean the barrels are replaced after an engagement, especially in the case where the weapon is used by Crusader Juggernauts, where immediately after an engagement the gun is repaired and blessed which due to the shortness of juggernaut engagements it is wholly practical. This weapon is an anti-armor weapon, and can shred light and heavy infantry alike as well as tear into vehicles. It is only hindered by a shorter range, and makes it a good street sweeper.

Larger Variants

The Battle Cannon is the most common high powered cannon of the New Covenant. It is a high caliber cannon, using 122mm smoothbore that fires advanced rounds, either armor piercing for Anti-Vehicular warfare, Explosive for bombarding troops, and even crowd control variants that fire rubber shot pellets. This cannon has stood the test of time and is deployed in mass, fielded on the Tiber Main Battle Tanks as its standard weapon, and can be found in economical versions of the August Heavy Tank and the Greatsword as Twin-linked on a single turret.

The Battle Cannon mk2 sports the same Caliber of bullet with but a larger shell, and is designed for tank hunting, and it is only mounted on Tank Hunting variants of the Tiber tank.

The Battle Cannon Ultra is the Epitome of the battle cannon and is only found on Greatswords as it's main weapon, it has a Longer barrel and fires a 150mm shell, but the Shell is designed like the Lance round, being both explosive and armor piercing, it uses rocket propulsion combined with standard combustion propellent and has gyroscopic stabilizing for maximum accuracy and higher speeds than standard ammunition. This Cannon can also be found on the Turret of large Crusader Dropships.

The Devastator Super Gatling is a massive Gattling gun that fires advanced armor piercing rounds at around 6000rpm, and fires armor piercing rounds typically having a plastic-steel mix sheath with a small adamantium core for penetration. The round is devastating to all vehicles and only the Largest vehicles can withstand its onslaught, and that is only if their weak spots are not targeted. This weapon can be mounted on the Tiber Tank Turret in place of its standard gun making it effective in controlling large numbers of enemies and can even utterly destroy heavy infantry with its sheer amount of firepower, chewing threw even the heaviest of infantry through rapid destruction of armor. This Weapon is more often fielded on the Brimstone Gunship, where it can provide air to ground support against enemy ranks and vehicles.

The Grand Cannon is a humongous cannon, but it is not a typical SPW, but it uses much of its mechanics, Refer to Electromagnetic Weaponry for details on how said weapons work. It is both a SPW and Railgun and it is mounted on Space ships as a standard weapon in the Broadside guns of ships. It fires a massive caseless round of huge proportions and uses a magnetic rail integrated into the weapons smooth bore for additional acceleration, effectively using both types of acceleration, saving energy by using combustion as the primary accelerate and the Rail as a boost. The Weapon fires huge rounds that have a Metallic mix and Ceramics with adamantium tips for piercing, and packed to the brim with explosives. The Gun is effective in ship to ship combat as well as bombarding a planet, with imprecise bombardments, though it is precise enough to hit in the targeted area, and usually the ship can fire dozens from its broadside depending on ship class and if they take Broadside weapons instead of Hangars.

Edolas SP Weapons

The Kingdom of Edolas generally prefers Electromagnetic Weaponry and Plasma Weaponry over Solid Projectile Weaponry, seeing it as an ineffective and old method of propulsion. However, many older, powerful, weapons are still in service in the Edolas military; purely for their still-present combat lethality and reliability. Their role has mostly been replaced by the aforementioned weapons, but will likely not be fully retired until a few more decades.

Infantry Weapons

The Casull

M40 'Casull' Handgun The Casull is a classical semi-automatic handgun based on the designs of the Human arms manufacturer Colt. Despite the age of the design, the Ventus were easily able to vastly improve it with modern upgrades such as electrothermal chemical technology in order for it to match up to other handguns. The Casull is approximately 39 cm in length, the reason for this long length being to improve recoil dampening and round stopping power. The Casull regularly fires a powerful 10mm round encased in a full metal jacket with Sakuradite used in both the ignition charge and the explosive tip, but can also fire hollow tips, tracer rounds, and several other different types of ammunition.

M45 'Mauser' Submachine Gun The M45 is a fully-automatic submachine gun based on relatively recent innovations by Ventus scientists, it uses electrothermal chemical technology to fire rounds without the need for moving parts via using a plasma cartridge to ignite and control the ammunition's propellant, using electrical energy to trigger the process. With this technology, and other advancements created by Ventus scientists, the Mauser is able to fire at a rate of two thousand and five hundred rounds per minute. This extremely high rate of fire is what has kept the Mauser in service, along with it's caliber size and variable ammunition types.

The Arcus

M44 'Arcus' Battle Rifle The M44 is a select-fire rifle that has been in service for over twenty years in the Edolas military. The Ventus employ the Arcus as a medium-range marksman rifle; it fires 9.5x40mm ammunition from a 40 round magazine, which fits flush in the receiver. The magazine housing is built directly into the underside of the stock of the rifle and is located behind the grip. This titanium alloy weapon is gas-operated with a rotating bolt and therefore must be charged before the first round can be fired. The charging handle used to chamber the round is located on the left side of the weapon and does not move during operation, but is pushed back during reloading. The rifle has a housed magazine in the stock. The ejection port is located on the right side of the weapon. The Arcus remains in service in the Edolas military due to its ease of use and its lethality, in addition to its reliability and its lack of recoil.

The Cygnus

M46 'Cygnus' Sniper Rifle The M46 is a semi-automatic Edolas sniper rifle that fires 14.5 x 114mm APFSDS (Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot) from a 5-round magazine. It is designed in the conventional layout, so the magazine and operating system are located in front of the trigger. The Cyngus is gas-operated. The action must be cycled to chamber the first round. Once the first round is fired, the gases from the previous round forces the bolt back, seating a new round on its return forward, and continues to do so until the mag is empty. Once the mag is empty, the bolt locks back and the mag is removed. After a new magazine is inserted, the bolt catch button must be pressed which releases the bolt forward, placing a new round into the chamber. The charging handle is on the left side of the rifle - allowing the user to cycle the action without unseating the weapon - and is physically a part of the bolt, and travels during operation of the weapon. The weapon is about 187.5 cm long and is completely interchangeable. From the barrel to the breech to the stock, everything can be changed to fit the current situation and satisfy the operator. The M46 continues to be in service in the Edolas military due to both it's incredibly accurate hit ratio of 97.3% and it's sheer killing power.

Heavy Weapons

M50 'Harkonnen' Anti-Material/Anti-Personel Cannon Weighing 85 lb unloaded, the 25 mm, single-shot breech loader M50 is an incredibly powerful infantry cannon. The Harkonnen uses various types of shells, including depleted uranium with tungsten for piercing armored targets, incendiary napalm rounds for destroying large groups of opponents both on land and in the air, rocket-assisted shells with explosive Sakuradite payloads, and even grapeshot-type shells for taking out infantry. This adaptability and sheer power has allowed the M50 to remain in service in the Edolas military, despite it's heavy weight making it an unpopular option among most Ventus soldiers.

Crescania SP Weapons

The Crescanian Confederacy has many models of solid projectile weaponry from older times, as they recognize that such ballistic weaponry is still highly effective, even in such advanced times, and only switched them out in favour of Plasma Weaponry due to the plasma's ability to melt armour and incapacitate hostiles with pain. Crescania still use SPW's for roles their plasma technology cannot take, such as rocket launchers or sniper rifles, where the infamous M-19 Az Gara is still used.

Infantry Weapons

M-78CK 'Hashan' Handgun The M-78CK is a lightweight semi-automatic pistol which served the Crescanian military as standard secondary firearm for over 80 years and is now a popular personal firearm on the civilian market, and is very often seen in the holsters of security personnel. The pistol got the Crescanian word for rock - 'Hashan' - as its nickname due to its extreme durability and reliability. It is known for being able to take heavy punishment and still perform flawlessly. The gun fires a 8.62mm round, which by its time was a common Crescanian calibre, and contains a 15 round clip in its grip. Although its design seems aged even for the time it was introduced, it is clear proof that old things work still.

F31 Bullpup Submachine gun The only automatic SPW still in service in the Crescanian Confederacy, the F31 Bullpup is known as the standard weapon of Ghast operatives. It is a relatively long gas-operated SMG with a built-in internal sound suppressor and frontal grip. It fires 8.62mm rounds at 920 rounds/min from a 38 round magazine placed in the back of the gun in a bullpup construction. It is one of the oldest guns still in service in the Crescanian military, being designed and first deployed in 2799G.C as a replacement for the aged F30 Submachine gun, which in turn was used to hack away at the Salchissan infrastructure in the Crescanian invasion of Salchissa.
