"Normal combat knifes are often not sharp enough or too wide to stab in between two scales."
I honestly doubt that normal knives would be very inefficient, wise. A Kaveni's scales would be unlikely to be able to resist a firm knife thrust. Otherwise, ancient Kaveni couldn't really have gotten anywhere when fighting teeth and claw for a mate for example.
