I honestly doubt that normal knives would be very inefficient, wise. A Kaveni's scales would be unlikely to be able to resist a firm knife thrust. Otherwise, ancient Kaveni couldn't really have gotten anywhere when fighting teeth and claw for a mate for example.

Hhhm, you must think of the scales as a natural armour. The scales are hard and bony, because of this most knives will deflect or get stuck in it without harming the person underneath.
The Kaveni have weak spots where the scales are futher apart or completely gone.
