The Realm of Darkness is along with the Realm of Light and the Realm of Nothingness one of the three main parts that make up the universe. It is an integral part of the very universe itself, a counterpart to the Realm of Light which makes up both the home of nearly all sentient species and the Domains of deities. The Realm of Darkness is in between the Realm of Light and the Realm of Nothingness in regards to physical material, with it having more than Nothingness yet much less than Light. Which makes it difficult, but not impossible, for material beings to move inside it.
The Realm has existed since the beginning of the universe, as a primordial component to the spiritual concept of Darkness. To enter the Realm of Darkness is a difficult feat for denizens of the Realm of Light, as opening a doorway -or Door to Darkness- which leads to it both costs a great deal of Mana and is extremely complicated; not to mention very dangerous for the area in which the doorway is opened. But openings Corridors which pass through it is fairly simple, and is used by many beings for FTL travel due to the Realm of Darkness' space-warping properties (just as the Realm of Nothingness warps time in regards to the Realm of Light, so does the Realm of Darkness warp space). But doing even this is very dangerous, as it corrupts the hearts of those travelling through it from the Realm of Light; which can result in death or worse from overuse. Nobodies, however, have nothing to fear from travelling through Corridors of Darkness; as they have no Hearts to corrupt.
The Realm of Darkness is home to strange creatures called Heartless, who are the result of a being from the Realm of Light having their Hearts completely corrupted by exposure to Darkness. They are formless beings, capable of existing in the Realm of Darkness as nothing but pairs of yellow eyes; and are only capable of exiting to the Realm of Light through a Door to Darkness being opened from the side of Light. Other than that, the Realm is home to an uncountable amount of Demons, who reside in the Darkness of almost every Domain. Contrary to its name, however, the Realm is not completely without light in a physical sense; streams of violet and purple often run through it, giving it an eerily beautiful appearance from the inside. But these streams, while alluring in appearance, are nothing other than the pure materialized Evil from denizens of the Realm of Light; which streams through due to Darkness' inherent nature of hiding all that exists within it. Just as as with Alignments, however, Darkness is not inherently evil; but it is very easy for evil to hide within it, so these corrupting streams often contribute to the damage which traversing the Realm of Darkness holds.
